An essential point of proper cough treatment is identification of its type, whether we are dealing with a nonproductive (dry) cough or productive (wet) cough. If the patient suffers from productive cough, it is indicated to start a treatment with thinning secretion mucolitics, for example with acetylocystein, acting directly on the structure of mucus. Drugs that inhibit cough (antitussive) in such case are absolutely contraindicated. According to the experts recommendations, the patient should…

Effect of N-acetylcysteine in subjects with slow pulmonary mucociliary clearance.

TLDR
It would seem that slow clearers are protected against lung aggressions by prevention and/or mucus-active drugs.

Recommendations for the assessment and management of cough in children

TLDR
Current evidence has highlighted that parental reporting of the frequency and severity of a child’s cough is unreliable compared with objective measures, and this is especially true for nocturnal cough.

Acetylcysteine and carbocysteine for acute upper and lower respiratory tract infections in paediatric patients without chronic broncho-pulmonary disease.

TLDR
Overall safety was good but very few data were available to evaluate safety in infants younger than two years, however, 48 cases of paradoxically increased bronchorrhoea observed in infants were reported to the French pharmacovigilance system.

Characterization of N-acetylcysteine and ambroxol in anti-oxidant therapy.

Inhibitory Effect of N-Acetylcysteine on Adherence of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae to Human Oropharyngeal Epithelial Cells in vitro

TLDR
NAC lowers bacterial adhesion in vitro to oropharyngeal epithelial cells in doses equivalent to that is being used clinically, which might be a contributory mechanism behind the reduction of infectious exacerbations in chronic bronchitis patients.

Bacteria associated with obstructive pulmonary disease elaborate extracellular products that stimulate mucin secretion by explants of guinea pig airways.

TLDR
Bacteria which chronically infect or colonize respiratory airways of individuals suffering from obstructive lung disease can elaborate extracellular product capable of stimulating secretion of mucin, suggesting the bacteria themselves may contribute to local manifestations and, ultimately, to the pathogenesis of obstructive disease.
