Acetaminophen Overdose in Pregnancy
@article{Wilkes2005AcetaminophenOI, title={Acetaminophen Overdose in Pregnancy}, author={Jason M Wilkes and Larry E. Clark and Jorge Luis Herrera Herrera}, journal={Southern Medical Journal}, year={2005}, volume={98}, pages={1118-1122} }
Acetaminophen (APAP) is the most common drug overdose in pregnancy. Available data regarding APAP overdose in pregnancy is limited to case reports and a small prospective case series. APAP has been demonstrated to cross the placenta and in toxic doses may harm the fetal and maternal hepatocytes. Fetal hepatocytes metabolize APAP into both active and toxic metabolites. These toxic metabolites may cause fetal hepatic necrosis. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has also been demonstrated to cross the…

Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity: a Comprehensive Update
- Medicine, BiologyJournal of clinical and translational hepatology

Although APAP hepatotoxicity follows a predictable timeline of hepatic failure, its clinical presentation might vary, and future research focus may benefit from shifting towards obtaining antidotal knowledge at the molecular level, with focus on the underlying molecular signaling pathways.

Using concentrations of acetaminophen measured in meconium, which more objectively captures exposure of the fetus than maternal report, results do not support prior reports of adverse neurodevelopmental effects of in utero exposure toacetaminophen.

Acute Acetaminophen Overdose During Pregnancy
- MedicineObstetrics and gynecology
- 1989
It is recommended that pregnant women who take an acetaminophen overdose and have a potentially toxic serum level be treated with N-acetylcysteine as early as possible, with an increase in the incidence of spontaneous abortion or fetal death when treatment was begun late.
Paracetamol metabolites in the neonate following maternal overdose.
- Medicine, BiologyBritish journal of clinical pharmacology
- 1984
The pattern of urinary metabolites in the neonate was similar to that observed in the mother, but there was a marked delay in the time taken to reach peak plasma concentrations of metabolites, consistent with a very slow biotransformation of the drug.
