By performing new, long and numerically accurate general-relativistic simulations of magnetized, equal-mass neutron-star binaries, we investigate the role that realistic magnetic fields may have in the evolution of these systems. In particular, we study the evolution of the magnetic fields and show that they can influence the survival of the hypermassive neutron star produced at the merger by accelerating its collapse to a black hole. We also provide evidence that, even if purely poloidal…

General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Binary Neutron Star Mergers with the APR4 Equation of State
• Physics
• 2016
We present new results of fully general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers performed with the Whisky code. All the models use a piecewise polytropic
Magnetorotational instability in neutron star mergers: impact of neutrinos
• Physics
• 2016
The merger of two neutron stars may give birth to a long-lived hypermassive neutron star. If it harbours a strong magnetic field of magnetar strength, its spin-down could explain several features of
MAGNETIC INTERACTIONS IN COALESCING NEUTRON STAR BINARIES
It is expected on both evolutionary and empirical grounds that many merging neutron star (NS) binaries are composed of a highly magnetized NS in orbit with a relatively low magnetic field NS. I study
General relativistic simulations of black-hole-neutron-star mergers: Effects of magnetic fields
• Physics
• 2012
As a neutron star (NS) is tidally disrupted by a black hole (BH) companion at the end of a BH-NS binary inspiral, its magnetic fields will be stretched and amplified. If sufficiently strong, these
Producing Magnetar Magnetic Fields in the Merger of Binary Neutron Stars
• Physics
• 2014
The merger of binary neutron stars (BNSs) can lead to large amplifications of the magnetic field due to the development of turbulence and instabilities in the fluid, such as the Kelvin-Helmholtz
Magnetically-induced outflows from binary neutron star merger remnants
• Physics
• 2015
Recent observations by the Swift satellite have revealed long-lasting ($\sim 10^2-10^5\,\mathrm{s}$), "plateau-like" X-ray afterglows in the vast majority of short gamma-ray bursts events. This has
Poloidal-Field Instability in Magnetized Relativistic Stars
• Physics
• 2012
We investigate the instability of purely poloidal magnetic fields in nonrotating neutron stars (NSs) by means of three-dimensional general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations, extending the

General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of binary neutron star mergers forming a long-lived neutron star
• Physics
• 2011
Merging binary neutron stars (BNSs) represent the ultimate targets for multimessenger astronomy, being among the most promising sources of gravitational waves (GWs), and, at the same time, likely

We perform magnetohydrodynamic simulations in full general relativity (GRMHD) of quasi-circular, equal-mass, binary neutron stars that undergo merger. The initial stars are irrotational, n = 1
