The mechanisms by which electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) causes its antidepressive effect are unknown. Because ECT requires repeated induction of electroconvulsive seizures, adaptive changes in the brain and regulation of gene expression, are likely to be the fundamental basis on which ECT acts.
