A near-equal mass binary black hole can clear a central cavity in a circumbinary accretion disk; however, previous works have revealed accretion streams entering this cavity. Here we use 2D hydrodynamical simulations to study the accretion streams and their periodic behavior. In particular, we perform a suite of simulations, covering different binary mass ratios $q=M_2/M_1$ in the range $0.01 \leq q \leq 1$. In each case, we follow the system for several thousand binary orbits, until it relaxes…
A transition in circumbinary accretion discs at a binary mass ratio of 1:25
We study circumbinary accretion discs in the framework of the restricted three-body problem (R3Bp) and via numerically solving the height-integrated equations of viscous hydrodynamics. Varying the
BINARY BLACK HOLE ACCRETION FROM A CIRCUMBINARY DISK: GAS DYNAMICS INSIDE THE CENTRAL CAVITY
We present the results of two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary disk accretion using the finite-volume code DISCO. This code solves the 2D viscous Navier-Stokes equations on
Precession and accretion in circumbinary discs: the case of HD 104237
We present the results of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of the disc around the young, eccentric stellar binary HD 104237. We find that the binary clears out a large cavity in the
Evolution of a Binary Black Hole with a Retrograde Circumbinary Accretion Disk
We consider the evolution of a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) surrounded by a retrograde accretion disk. Assuming the disk is exactly in the binary plane and transfers energy and angular
Binary Black Hole Accretion Flows From a Misaligned Circumbinary Disk
We studied the basic properties of accretion flows onto binary supermassive black holes, including cases in which a circumbinary disk is misaligned with the binary orbital plane, by means of
Hydrodynamics of Circumbinary Accretion: Angular Momentum Transfer and Binary Orbital Evolution
We carry out 2D viscous hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary accretion using the AREPO code. We self-consistently compute the accretion flow over a wide range of spatial scales, from the
Quasi-periodicity of Supermassive Binary Black Hole Accretion Approaching Merger
In this paper we continue the first ever study of magnetized mini-disks coupled to circumbinary accretion in a supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) approaching merger reported in Bowen et al. 2018.
Three-dimensional mhd Simulation of Circumbinary Accretion Disks. II. net Accretion Rate
When an accretion disk surrounds a binary rotating in the same sense, the binary exerts strong torques on the gas. Analytic work in the 1D approximation indicated that these torques sharply diminish
Suppression of the accretion rate in thin discs around binary black holes
We present three-dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations investigating the dependence of the accretion rate on the disc thickness around an equal-mass, circular black hole
Gas squeezing during the merger of a supermassive black hole binary
We study accretion rates during the gravitational wave-driven merger of a binary supermassive black hole embedded in an accretion disc, formed by gas driven to the centre of the galaxy. We use 3D

Gas pile‐up, gap overflow and Type 1.5 migration in circumbinary discs: general theory
Many astrophysical binaries, from planets to black holes, exert strong torques on their circumbinary accretion disks, and are expected to significantly modify the disk structure. Despite the several
THREE-DIMENSIONAL MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC SIMULATIONS OF CIRCUMBINARY ACCRETION DISKS: DISK STRUCTURES AND ANGULAR MOMENTUM TRANSPORT
We present the first three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of a circumbinary disk surrounding an equal-mass binary. The binary maintains a fixed circular orbit of separation a. As
Mass Flow through Gaps in Circumbinary Disks
We demonstrate through smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations that a circumbinary disk can supply mass to the central binary through gas streams that penetrate the disk gap without closing it.

We demonstrate, using a simple analytic model, that the presence of a massive satellite can globally modify the structure and emission properties of an accretion disc to which it is tidally coupled.
Retrograde accretion and merging supermassive black holes
TLDR
In all cases the binary coalesces once it has absorbed the angular momentum of a gas mass comparable to that of the secondary black hole, and the coalescence time-scale is always ∼ M2/M.
