The coal mining community of Longyearbyen suffered a total loss of 84 persons in fatal accidents during the 40-year period from 1950 to 1989. Up to the beginning of the 1970's the great majority of injuries causing death were related to coal mining. In the 20-year period from 1970-1989 14 people died in occupational accidents. 24 were killed during off-work hours.
