A model of an accelerated expansion of the Crab Nebula powered by the spinning-down Crab pulsar is proposed, in which time dependence of the acceleration is connected to the evolution of pulsar luminosity. Using recent observational data, we derive estimates of the Crab neutron-star moment of inertia. Correlations between the neutron star moment of inertia and its mass and radius allow for rough estimates of the Crab neutron-star radius and mass. In contrast to the previously used constant… Expand

The Crab Nebula: An Astrophysical Chimera
The Crab Nebula, henceforth the Crab, the remnant of the historical super- nova of 1054 AD, has long been of intense interest. The pulsar at the center of the Crab has a spin-down luminosity ∼10 5Expand
Hydrodynamical Neutron-star Kicks in Electron-capture Supernovae and Implications for the CRAB Supernova
Neutron stars (NSs) obtain kicks of typically several 100 km/s at birth. The gravitational tug-boat mechanism can explain these kicks as consequences of asymmetric mass ejection during the supernovaExpand
Influence of Neutron Star Parameters on Evolutions of Different Types of Pulsar
Influences of the mass, moment of inertia, rotation, absence of stability in the atmosphere and some other parameters of neutron stars on the evolution of pulsars are examined. It is shown that theExpand
Neutron star sequences and the starquake glitch model for the Crab and the Vela pulsars
We construct for the first time, the sequences of stable neutron star (NS) models capable of explaining simultaneously, the glitch healing parameters, Q, of both the pulsars, the Crab (Q≥0.7) and theExpand
Constraints on the dense matter equation of state from the measurements of PSR J0737¿3039A moment of inertia and PSR J0751+1807 mass
The moment of inertia of the pulsar A in the neutron star binary J0737−3039 will soon be measurable through detailed measurements of the periastron advance. We present the calculation of the momentExpand
Constraining the nuclear equation of state from nuclear physics and neutron star observations
Neutron stars are born when massive stars run out of their nuclear fuel and undergo gravitational collapse. Neutron stars belong to the most compact objects in the observable Universe. MacroscopicExpand
Constraining the Equation of State with Moment of Inertia Measurements
We estimate that the moment of inertia of star A in the recently discovered double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039 may be determined after a few years of observation to ~10% accuracy. This would enableExpand
Neutron star observations: Prognosis for equation of state constraints
Abstract We investigate how current and proposed observations of neutron stars can lead to an understanding of the state of their interiors and the key unknowns: the typical neutron star radius andExpand
Equation of state, neutron stars and exotic phases
Abstract The role of the equation of state in the structure of neutron stars is summarized. At densities beyond a few times the normal nuclear saturation density, the neutron-proton-electron sea canExpand
Nuclear Equation of state for Compact Stars and Supernovae
The equation of state (EoS) of hot and dense matter is a fundamental input to describe static and dynamical properties of neutron stars, core-collapse supernovae and binary compact-star mergers. WeExpand

New Measurements of the Expansion of the Crab Nebula
Published images of the Crab Nebula have been scanned and measured to derive proper motions, the age of the nebula, and its point of origin. Astrometric reductions provided rms errors ranging from toExpand
Photometry of the Crab Nebula : variability and the mass of emitting gas
The luminosity of the Crab Nebula in H-beta He I 5876, and the synchrotron continuum was measured. The data suggest that the continuum has remained constant within measurement errors over the last 30Expand
Observations of the Crab Nebula and Its Pulsar in the Far-Ultraviolet and in the Optical* **
We present far-UV observations of the Crab Nebula and its pulsar made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Broad, blueshifted absorption arising in theExpand
Moments of inertia for neutron and strange stars: Limits derived for the Crab pulsar
Recent estimates of the properties of the Crab nebula are used to derive constraints on the moment of inertia, mass and radius of the pulsar. To this purpose, we employ an approximate formulaExpand
Motions and Structure of the Filamentary Envelope of the Crab Nebula
Proper motions have been measured for 132 line-emitting filaments in the Crab Nebula on direct plates taken with the 100 and 200-inch telescopes. These motions, if assumed constant and extrapolatedExpand
Dust in the Tycho, Kepler and Crab supernova remnants
SuperNova Remnants (SNR) have been extensively studied in radio, X-rays and optical, but barely in the InfraRed (IR). From IRAS observations, SNR are known to be IR emitters, but the origin of theExpand
An Optical Study of the Circumstellar Environment Around the Crab Nebula
Long-slit spectra of two peripheral regions around the Crab Nebula show no H(alpha) emission down to a flux level of 1.5 x 10(exp -7)erg/sq cm s sr (0.63 Rayleigh), corresponding to an emissionExpand
