In a cryostat, an isothermal boundary is proximate a large plurality of devices that are being cooled. The barrier is slightly colder than the devices so that heat flux therebetween is very small. The devices are in good thermal contact with a cold plate, which is made of a high thermal conductivity material. A single heater and a temperature sensor control the temperature of the cold plate as heat flows from the cold plate to the isothermal boundary.
