Abstract Abundant new travelling wave solutions of the (2 + 1)-dimensional Sine–Gordon equation are obtained by the generalized Jacobi elliptic function method. The solutions obtained include the kink-shaped solutions, bell-shaped solutions, singular solutions and periodic solutions.
