Gaseous losses of ammonia (NH3) have been observed in citrus orchards when urea is surface-applied to the soils, and this loss might significantly limit the effectiveness of the nitrogen (N) fertilizer. However, a portion of the volatilized NH3 might be absorbed by the plants through the leaves.
