We consider the absorption of probe photons by electrons in the presence of an intense, pulsed, background field. Our analysis reveals an interplay between regularisation and gauge invariance which distinguishes absorption from its crossing-symmetric processes, as well as a physical interpretation of absorption in terms of degenerate processes in the weak field limit. In the strong field limit we develop a locally constant field approximation (LCFA) for absorption which also exhibits new…

Interference effects in nonlinear Compton scattering due to pulse envelope
Nonlinear Compton scattering is calculated for the collision of an electron with a plane-wave pulse. A midinfrared (IR) peak arises in the photon spectrum due to long-range interference associated
Pulse envelope effect on nonlinear Compton scattering in electron-laser collisions
Nonlinear Compton scattering is calculated for the collision of an electron with a plane wave pulse. A mid infra-red (IR) peak arises in the photon spectrum due to long-range interference associated

A challenge to upcoming experiments that plan to collide a particle beam with laser pulses of moderate intensity is how to correctly incorporate quantum effects into simulation frameworks. Using a
Nonlinear photon trident versus double Compton scattering and resummation of one-step terms
We study the photon trident process, where an initial photon turns into an electron-positron pair and a final photon under a nonlinear interaction with a strong plane-wave background field. We show

Abstract For scattering amplitudes in strong background fields, it is — at least in principle — possible to perturbatively expand the background to obtain higher-point vacuum amplitudes. In the case
