We consider the absorption of probe photons by electrons in the presence of an intense, pulsed, background field. Our analysis reveals an interplay between regularisation and gauge invariance which distinguishes absorption from its crossing-symmetric processes, as well as a physical interpretation of absorption in terms of degenerate processes in the weak field limit. In the strong field limit we develop a locally constant field approximation (LCFA) for absorption which also exhibits new…

Interference effects in nonlinear Compton scattering due to pulse envelope
Nonlinear Compton scattering is calculated for the collision of an electron with a plane-wave pulse. A midinfrared (IR) peak arises in the photon spectrum due to long-range interference associated
Pulse envelope effect on nonlinear Compton scattering in electron-laser collisions
Nonlinear Compton scattering is calculated for the collision of an electron with a plane wave pulse. A mid infra-red (IR) peak arises in the photon spectrum due to long-range interference associated
One-photon pair annihilation in pulsed plane-wave backgrounds
We study the $2\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1$ process of electron-positron pair annihilation to a single photon in a plane-wave background. The probability of the process in a pulsed plane wave is
Nonlinear Compton scattering of polarized photons in plane-wave backgrounds
We investigate the phenomenology of nonlinear Compton scattering of polarized photons by unpolarized electrons in plane-wave backgrounds. The energy and angular spectra of polarized photons are

A challenge to upcoming experiments that plan to collide a particle beam with laser pulses of moderate intensity is how to correctly incorporate quantum effects into simulation frameworks. Using a
Nonlinear photon trident versus double Compton scattering and resummation of one-step terms
We study the photon trident process, where an initial photon turns into an electron-positron pair and a final photon under a nonlinear interaction with a strong plane-wave background field. We show
Ultrarelativistic electrons in counterpropagating laser beams
The dynamics and radiation of ultrarelativistic electrons in strong counterpropagating laser beams are investigated. Assuming that the particle energy is the dominant scale in the problem, an
One-loop multicollinear limits from 2-point amplitudes on self-dual backgrounds
Abstract For scattering amplitudes in strong background fields, it is — at least in principle — possible to perturbatively expand the background to obtain higher-point vacuum amplitudes. In the case

Extended locally constant field approximation for nonlinear Compton scattering
The locally constant field approximation (LCFA) has to date underpinned the numerical simulation of quantum processes in laser-plasma physics and astrophysics, but its validity has recently been
High-energy behavior of strong-field QED in an intense plane wave
Analytical calculations of radiative corrections in strong-field QED have hinted that in the presence of an intense plane wave the effective coupling of the theory in the high-energy sector may
Scattering in plane-wave backgrounds: Infrared effects and pole structure
We consider two aspects of scattering in strong plane-wave backgrounds. First, we show that the infrared divergences in elastic scattering depend on the structure of the background, but can be
Nonlinear Compton scattering of ultrashort intense laser pulses
The scattering of temporally shaped intense laser pulses off electrons is discussed by means of manifestly covariant quantum electrodynamics. We employ a framework based on Volkov states with a
Exact final state integrals for strong field QED
This paper introduces the exact, analytic integration of all final state variables for the process of nonlinear Compton scattering in an intense plane-wave laser pulse, improving upon a previously
Interaction of Intense Laser Beams with Electrons
The interaction of an intense coherent photon beam with free electrons is discussed. The photon beam is treated as a classical external electromagnetic field. The discussion is exact within the
Laser photon merging in an electromagnetic field inhomogeneity
We study the effect of laser photon merging, or equivalently high harmonic generation, in the quantum vacuum subject to inhomogeneous electromagnetic fields. Such a process is facilitated by the
Second Order QED Processes in an Intense Electromagnetic Field
Some non linear, second order QED processes in the presence of intense plane electromagnetic waves are investigated. Analytic expressions with general kinematics are derived for Compton scattering
Infrared divergences in plane wave backgrounds
We show that the emission of soft photons via nonlinear Compton scattering in a pulsed plane wave (laser field) is in general infrared divergent. We give examples of both soft and soft-collinear
Vacuum high-harmonic generation in the shock regime and photon-photon scattering dynamics
The presence of charged quantum virtual states permits a nonlinear self-interaction of the electromagnetic field in vacuum. This interaction can be described as real photon-photon scattering. This
