Drug-nutrient interactions affecting chromium were investigated in this study. Rats were injected with indomethacin to reduce endogenous prostaglandin synthesis and dosed with prostaglandin analogues or prostacyclin. Effects on absorption, tissue distribution and urinary excretion of 51Cr from 51CrCl3 were evaluated using a 2 x 4 factorial experimental design. Forty-eight adult male rats were food deprived for 12 h and then injected intraperitoneally with indomethacin (5 mg/kg body wt) or…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Interleukin-1α-induced changes in chromium-51 absorption, tissue retention, and urinary excretion in rats

The decreased absorption, retention, and urinary excretion of chromium-51 from51CrCl3 in this study may be due to IL-1α-mediated increases in the production of prostaglandins and/or decreased production of gastric acid.

Endotoxin decreases 51CrCl3 uptake in early weaned pigs

Data suggest that during acute infection, there might be decreased Cr uptake and retention in early weaned pigs.

Sub-chronic indomethacin treatment and its effect on the male reproductive system of albino rats: possible protective role of black tea extract

Interestingly, rats supplemented with BTE showed remarkable improvements in testicular weight gain, sperm count and motility, serum gonadotropins and testosterone concentrations, along with testicular histopathology.

Nephrotoxicity induced by chromium (VI) in adult rats and their progeny

K2Cr2O7 administrated to female rats during late pregnancy and early postnatal periods provoked kidney damages in dams and their offspring, with significant increase in creatinine clearance found in treated mothers and in their progeny.

Chromium absorption, safety, and toxicity†

Despite the general assumption of safety of trivalent Cr, the widespread use of Cr supplements, particularly by diabetic patients, warrants more extensive monitoring of safety for long-term use.

The safety and efficacy of high-dose chromium.

Chromium supplementation does result in tissue retention, especially in the kidney, although no pathogenic effect has been demonstrated despite considerable study, and the mechanism of low molecular weight chromium binding substance in up-regulating the insulin effect eight-fold is discussed.

The Safety and Efficacy of High-Dose Chromium Davis

There is evidence of hormonal effects of supplemental chromium besides the effect on insulin, and chromium supplementation does result in tissue retention, especially in the kidney, although no pathogenic effect has been demonstrated despite considerable study.

Effect of Turmeric Oil in Reproductive Efficiency of Immature Female Rats Exposed to Oxidative Stress Induced by Potassium Dichromate

K2Cr2O7 has bad effects on reproductive efficiency of female rats and TO has improvement on some of these effects and treatment with K2Cr 2O7 and TO together show significant increase in uterine and ovarian weights, percentage of vaginal time opening, serum GHS level and diameter of ovarian follicles in categories (201-300) and (>400).

Role of prostaglandin E2 in zinc absorption in the rat.

The data suggest that prostaglandin not only binds zinc, but also facilitates its transport across the intestinal mucosa.

The association between PGE2 activity and mucosal permeability in proximal small bowel.

The hypothesis that an age-related increase in cyclooxygenase as reflected in production of PGE2 in the proximal small bowel (PSB) is associated with the maturation of the mucosal barrier as determined by 51Cr-EDTA permeability is tested.

Prostaglandins reduce hydrochloric acid-induced increase in duodenal mucosal permeability by a mechanism not related to stimulation of alkaline secretion.

It is concluded that endogenous prostaglandins reduced the extent of 100 mM HCl-induced duodenal mucosal damage by a mechanism other than the stimulation of alkaline secretion.

This review summarizes the results of 15 controlled studies supplementing defined Cr(III) compounds to subjects with impaired glucose tolerance with the conclusion that chromium deficiency is a factor in the much discussed "Syndrome X" of insulin resistance.

AIN-93 purified diets for laboratory rodents: final report of the American Institute of Nutrition ad hoc writing committee on the reformulation of the AIN-76A rodent diet.

Two new diets may prove to be a better choice than AIN-76A for long-term as well as short-term studies with laboratory rodents because of a better balance of essential nutrients.
