Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a complex chronic condition causing widespread pain and variety of other symptoms. It produces pain in the soft tissues located around joints throughout the body. FMS has unknown etiology and its pathophysiology is not fully understood. However, abnormality in circadian rhythm of hormonal profiles and cytokines has been observed in this disorder. Moreover, there are reports of deficiency of serotonin, melatonin, cortisol and cytokines in FMS patients, which are… Expand
Is there a role for melatonin in fibromyalgia
TLDR
Administration of melatonin to patients with fibromyalgia has demonstrated suppression of many symptoms and an improved quality of life consistent with benefit as a therapy for the management of this condition, however, inconsistencies of available clinical evidence limit conclusion of a relationship between levels ofmelatonin and symptom profiles in patients with Fibromyalgia. Melatonin: A New-Generation Therapy for Reducing Chronic Pain and Improving Sleep Disorder-Related Pain.

  • Advances in experimental medicine and biology

TLDR
The properties, possible mechanisms, and function of melatonin in chronic pain are described and chronotherapy may be beneficial for the treatment of chronic pain. Expand
Melatonin Improves Mood Status and Quality of Life and Decreases Cortisol Levels in Fibromyalgia
TLDR
Melatonin improved mood, anxiety levels, and quality of life while decreasing cortisol levels in patients with fibromyalgia. Expand
Circadian variations in melatonin and cortisol in patients with cervical spinal cord injury
TLDR
It is concluded that circadian variations exist in the circulating levels of serum cortisol and melatonin in patients with CSCI and low levels of melatonin secretion during night may contribute to the pervasive sleep disruption and increased pain perception. Expand
When time stands still: an integrative review on the role of chronodisruption in posttraumatic stress disorder
TLDR
PTSD development is associated with chronodisruption findings and state-of-the-art methods of circadian rhythm assessment should be applied to bridge the gap between clinical significance and limited understanding of the relationship between traumatic stress, sleep and circadian system. Expand
Deciphering the Role of Sleep in Fibromyalgia Syndrome
Fibromyalgia syndromes (FMS) is a chronic and debilitating musculoskeletal pain disorder of unknown aetiology with usual accompanying features of fatigue, sleep disturbances and stiffness and is oneExpand
Potential pleiotropic beneficial effects of adjuvant melatonergic treatment in posttraumatic stress disorder
TLDR
It is concluded that adjuvant melatonergic treatment could provide a potentially promising treatment strategy in the management of PTSD and especially PTSD‐related syndromes and comorbidities. Expand
A Quest for Better Understanding of Biochemical Changes in Fibromyalgia Syndrome
TLDR
The initial FMS criteria included tenderness on pressure in at least 11 of 18 defined anatomic sites with the presence of widespread pain, but in the recent criteria it is clear that apart from the pain other seminal features of the disorder such as cognitive dysfunction, unrefreshing sleep, fatigue and mood disorders also play an important role in the diagnosis. Sleep, Melatonin, and the Menopausal Transition: What Are the Links?
TLDR
The pathophysiology of melatonin function as it relates to sleep disorders in menopausal women is discussed, highlighting the potential use of exogenous melatonin during the menopausal transition and beyond. Expand

Circadian rhythms of women with fibromyalgia.
TLDR
Although pain and stiffness were significantly increased in women with fibromyalgia compared with healthy women, there were no circadian rhythms in either parameter, suggesting that abnormalities in circadian rhythmicity are not a primary cause of fibromy arthritis or its symptoms. Expand
Melatonin levels in women with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
TLDR
Raised plasma melatonin concentrations have been documented in several other conditions that are associated with dysregulation of neuroendocrine axes, and indicate that there is no rationale for melatonin replacement therapy in patients with FM and CFS. Expand
Fibromyalgia and melatonin: are they related?

TLDR
The initial hypothesis on which this work was based considered that since patients with FMS had sleeping problems and melatonin is known to promote sleep, the sleep disturbance might be related to lower circulating melatonin, as indeed was the case, but the direction of a possible cause-effect relationship is unclear. TLDR
Time series analyses of measures of the circadian pattern of the sleep-wake behavioural system, immune, neuroendocrine and temperature functions in patients with fibromyalgia and CFS should determine whether alterations of aspects of the neuro-immune-endocrine systems that accompany disordered sleep physiology result in nonrestorative sleep, pain, fatigue, cognitive and mood symptoms in patients. Normal melatonin levels in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.
TLDR
No association was observed between aMT6s levels of patients with FM and disease duration, reproductive status, sleep and mood disturbances, and studies are needed to elucidate the possible role of melatonin in FM. Expand

TLDR
Before prescribing pharmacologic compounds aimed at modifying sleep, adequate pain control and sleep habits should be achieved; tricyclic antidepressants, trazadone, zopiclone, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may be required. Expand
Basal circadian and pulsatile ACTH and cortisol secretion in patients with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome
TLDR
It is concluded that the pattern of differences for basal circadian architecture of HPA axis hormones differs between patients with FMS and CFS compared to their matched control groups and the abnormalities in FMS patients are consistent with loss of H PA axis resiliency. Expand

TLDR
IL-6 is a mediator of sleepiness and its circadian pattern reflects the homeostatic drive for sleep, and appears to be somnogenic in rats. Expand

The increase of CAP rate indicates a worse quality of sleep in patients with fibromyalgia, and is strongly correlated to the severity of symptoms. Expand
