I first met Fred Hoyle when I was still a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology, where he came as a visiting professor in the early 1950’s. Hoyle had had a mixed reputation among us students; he was well known for his interest in the steadystate cosmology, and for his popularization of astronomy. We also knew that he had an immensely fertile imagination and many new ideas. Some, if not most, of his ideas were controversial; several of us wondered if perhaps they were not…
