We have used Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys images to generate color–magnitude diagrams that reach below the magnitude of the horizontal branch in the Sculptor Group dwarf galaxies ESO294-010 and ESO410-005. In both diagrams, blue horizontal branch stars are unambiguously present, a signature of the existence of an ancient stellar population whose age is comparable to that of the Galactic halo globular clusters. The result is reinforced by the discovery of numerous RR Lyrae…

Weak Galactic halo-Fornax dSph connection from RR Lyrae stars

Aims. For the first time accurate pulsation properties of the ancient variable stars of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) are discussed in the broad context of galaxy formation and evolution.

Variable stars in Local Group galaxies – V. The fast and early evolution of the low-mass Eridanus II dSph galaxy

We present a detailed study of the variable star population of Eridanus II (Eri II), an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy that lies close to the Milky Way virial radius. We analyse multi-epoch g, r, i

PUSHING THE LIMITS, EPISODE 2: K2 OBSERVATIONS OF EXTRAGALACTIC RR LYRAE STARS IN THE DWARF GALAXY LEO IV

We present the first observations of extragalactic pulsating stars in the K2 ecliptic survey of the Kepler space telescope. The variability of all three RR Lyrae stars in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy

The properties of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Cen A group

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) have been extensively investigated in the Local Group, but their low luminosity and surface brightness make similar work in more distant galaxy groups challenging.

THE STAR FORMATION HISTORIES OF LOCAL GROUP DWARF GALAXIES. II. SEARCHING FOR SIGNATURES OF REIONIZATION

We search for signatures of reionization in the star formation histories (SFHs) of 38 Local Group dwarf galaxies (104 < M⋆ < 109 M☉). The SFHs are derived from color–magnitude diagrams using archival

Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies: United and Divided

Although of humble appearance and often overlooked because of their modest physical sizes and low star densities, dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies revealed themselves as the most common type of

Probing the early chemical evolution of the Sculptor dSph with purely old stellar tracers

We present the metallicity distribution of a sample of 471 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars in the Sculptor dSph, obtained from the $I$-band Period-Luminosity relation. It is the first time that the early

Chemical Compositions of Field and Globular Cluster RR Lyrae Stars. I. NGC 3201

We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of horizontal branch stars in the globular cluster NGC 3201. We collected optical (4580–5330 Å), high-resolution (∼34,000), high signal-to-noise ratio

Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union

Abstract Galaxies cover a wide range of masses and star formation histories. In this review, I summarize some of the evolutionary key features of common galaxy types. At the high-mass end, very

The ISLAnds Project. III. Variable Stars in Six Andromeda Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies

We present a census of variable stars in six M31 dwarf spheroidal satellites observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. We detect 870 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars in the fields of And I (296), II (251), III

The gas-deficient dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies present an evolutionary puzzle that we explore in 40 early-type and late-type dwarfs in the Local Group and nearby field. Although dSph's

The Impact of Reionization on the Stellar Populations of Nearby Dwarf Galaxies

Cold dark matter models for galaxy formation predict that low-mass systems will be the first sites of star formation. As these objects have shallow gravitational potential wells, the subsequent
