Lateral displacement of the lower free border of the septal cartilage, with protrusion of the displaced cartilage into one nostril is a condition observed in many patients consulting rhinologists for relief of nasal obstruction. In such cases the free border of the septal cartilage, instead of occupying its normal midline position between the two skin folds of the columella, protrudes into one nostril, pulling the columella toward the side of the protrusion.
