Whether a firm's performance is more dependent on the resources or strategies it adopts at birth is widely debated in the literature. We endeavor to revolve this dispute by analyzing longitudinal data on thirty-six new independent ventures started worldwide in the semiconductor silicon crystal production industry between 1947 and 1997.
