Abstract An automatic following microscope has been developed and eventually will form the basis of a completely automatic measuring system for nuclear emulsions. At the present state of development, grey or black tracks can be followed at speeds up to 2 1 2 mm/minute, and it seems apparent that further improvements in design will produce higher speeds and allow minimum ionisation tracks to be followed.
