AMINO ACID AND SUGAR CONTENT OF THE NECTAR EXUDATE FROM LIMODORUM ABORTIVUM (ORCHIDACEAE). COMPARISON WITH EPIPACTIS ATROPURPUREA NECTAR COMPOSITION
@article{Pais1986AMINOAA, title={AMINO ACID AND SUGAR CONTENT OF THE NECTAR EXUDATE FROM LIMODORUM ABORTIVUM (ORCHIDACEAE). COMPARISON WITH EPIPACTIS ATROPURPUREA NECTAR COMPOSITION}, author={Maria Salom{\'e} S. Pais}, journal={Apidologie}, year={1986}, volume={17}, pages={125-136} }
SUMMARY The amino acid content of nectary exudates from two orchids, L. nbortivum (spur nectary) and E. ati!optirpiti-ea (open nectary) were studied by means of capillary gas chromatography. Amino acids were analyzed as the corresponding N-heptafluorobutyryl isopropyl esters. For each amino acid, enantiomeric composition was achieved by gas chromatography of the N-pentafluoropropionyl isopropyl esters on a capillary coated with the chiral liquid phase Chirasil-Val. Comparison of the amino acid…

What shapes amino acid and sugar composition in Mediterranean floral nectars
- Environmental Science
- 2006
It is argued that due to the highly Concentrated nectars in the dry Mediterranean communities that are characterised by outstanding melittophily, sugars play a less important role as phagostimulants compared to AAs in floral nectar, and phenylalanine appears to be of high importance in phrygana.
Nectar-secreting floral stomata in Maxillaria anceps Ames & C. Schweinf. (Orchidaceae).
- BiologyAnnals of botany
- 2005
Nectar secretion in a presumed entomophilous species of Maxillaria is described for the first time, as droplets that are exuded by modified stomata borne upon the labellar callus and collects upon thelabellum and at the base of the column-foot.
Change in floral nectar components from fresh to senescent flowers ofCapparis spinosa (Capparidaceae), a nocturnally flowering Mediterranean shrub
- BiologyPlant Systematics and Evolution
- 2004
Nectar volume, concentration, and sucrose/hexose ratio decreased considerably with flower age, while the glucose/fructose ratio remained constant, implying that nectar sucrose broke down in the course of anthesis, and amino acid changes to phenomena related to flower senescence in the dark are attributed.
Floral Nectar Chemistry in Orchids: A Short Review and Meta-Analysis
- MedicinePlants
- 2021
It is suggested that the most important factor shaping nectar traits in orchids is the pollinator type, although it is also found differentiation of nectar trait according to geographical regions.
Nectar Chemistry or Flower Morphology—What Is More Important for the Reproductive Success of Generalist Orchid Epipactis palustris in Natural and Anthropogenic Populations?
- Environmental ScienceInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences
- 2021
The aim of this study was to determine the level of reproductive success (RS) in natural and anthropogenic populations of generalist orchid Epipactis palustris and its dependence on flower structure…
Nectar, nectaries, flower visitors, and breeding system in five terrestrial Orchidaceae from central Argentina
- BiologyJournal of Plant Research
- 2006
Floral nectar sugar composition, nectary anatomy, and visitors are studied in five Argentine Orchidaceae, from 18 populations, to evaluate their breeding system and induce flower senescence.
How Are the Flower Structure and Nectar Composition of the Generalistic Orchid Neottia ovata Adapted to a Wide Range of Pollinators?
- MedicineInternational journal of molecular sciences
- 2021
Variation of flower structure and nectar chemistry and their weak correlation with RS confirms the generalistic character of N. ovata and among soil parameters, carbon and carbon:nitrogen ratio seems to be the most important in shaping flower structureand nectar Chemistry.
Biochemical Traits in the Flower Lifetime of a Mexican Mistletoe Parasitizing Mesquite Biomass
- Medicine, BiologyFront. Plant Sci.
- 2018
These traits presented by P. calyculatus flowers are able to engage and manipulate the behavior of flower visitors and contribute to the reproduction of the parasitic plant.

Amino-acids in Nectar and their Evolutionary Significance
- BiologyNature

Unusual feeding-behaviour is shown by butterflies of the genus Heliconius which collect pollen, steep it in nectar, and subsequently ingest the amino-acids that diffuse from the grains.
SUGAR CONTENT IN FLORAL AND EXTRAFLORAL EXUDATES OF ORCHIDS: POLLINATION, MYRMECOLOGY AND CHEMOTAXONOMY IMPLICATION
- Biology
- 1970
Sugars present in the floral and extrafloral exudates from a number of orchid species have been analysed and it would seem that scent, form and colour are the major attractants to pollinators in orchids.
Intraspecific Constancy of Floral Nectar Amino Acid Complements
- Environmental ScienceBotanical Gazette
- 1977
There is impressive constancy of the complements of nectars from a wide range of angiosperms on a "presence or absence" basis and considerable uniformity in the relative proportions of the amino acids represented.
Evaluating Responses of Honey Bees to Sugar Solutions Using an Artificial-Flower Feeder
- Biology
