Recent developments in the phase analysis of smelter grade aluminas have shown that aluminas with nominally similar specifications differ significantly in their phase compositions, particularly in the relative amounts of the transition alumina phases. These differences affect alumina performance in the smelting cell, for example dissolution characteristics and the potential for the alumina to generate HF.
