Previous contributions from this laboratory have been concerned with a survey of actinomycetes for antiphage activity (Asheshov et al., 1954) and the production, isolation, and study of biological properties of antibiotic substances with antiphage activity (Strelitz et al., 1955a, 1955b). The present communication deals with a material, akliavin, which is apparently a new antibiotic substance. The product shows many points of similarity with the antibiotic, luteomycin (Hata et al., 1949, 1950…

Leukaemomycin, an antibiotic with antitumor activity. I. Screening, fermentation, and biological activity.

TLDR
The biological activity and the physicochemical properties of leukaemomycin C are identical with known properties of the anthracycline antibiotic daunorubicin.

Daunomycin and Related Antibiotics

TLDR
Following Brockmann's suggestion (4963), those antibiotics that contained a tetrahydrotetracenquinone chromophore linked to a sugar should all be included in the anthracycline group.

Requinomycin, an inhibitor of R-factor transfer: isolation, characterization and properties.

TLDR
A new member of the anthracycline group of antibiotics named requinomycin has been isolated from a strain of Streptomyces filamentosus which had been screened for anti-phage activity, whose molecular formula was assigned to C40H54N2O16.

Anthracyclines

TLDR
The group of compounds has again emerged in the forefront of interest and the amount of information on the biogenesis of these compounds and on the mechanism of their action grows every year and it may be expected that the number of practically useful anthracyelines will further increase.

Antiphage activity of natural and synthetic substances: a new age for antivirals?

TLDR
This review highlights the main studies identifying substances with antiphage activity in comparison assays involving phages and eukaryotic viruses, in order to explore the potential of these substances as antivirals.

Preparation of 4- and 6-O-methyl-aclacinomycin derivatives and their antitumor activities.

In a preceding paper, we have reported the preparation of 4-O-methylaclacinomycin A (1)1). Since 1 showed a remarkable antitumor activity against L1210 leukemia in mice, we prepared various 4or

ANTITUMOR ANTHRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS, ACLACINOMYCIN A AND ANALOGUES

Aclacinomycin A and B, two major components of a new antitumor antibiotic complex, and their 19 analogues were produced by a culture of strain No. A144-M1, which was identified as Streptomyces

Effect of various inhibitors on the multiplication of BLE bacteriophage inBacillus licheniformis

TLDR
Ariflavine was the only substance which, at a concentration of 3 μg ml-1, completely suppressed phage multiplication while having no effect on the growth of Bacillus licheniformis and on the production of the antibiotic.

Antiphage activity of some actinomycetes

SummaryOf a total of 100 actinomycete strains isolated from soils of different origin, 65% contained substances with antiphage activity in their cultivation media, the effect being marked for more

CHRYSOMYCIN: A NEW ANTIBIOTIC SUBSTANCE FOR BACTERIAL VIRUSES

TLDR
Ch Chrysomycin, which contains only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, does not appear to be identical with any of the yellow antibiotic substances derived from Streptomyces although its ultraviolet spectrum shows certain similarities with that of aureolic acid.

NYBOMYCIN, A NEW ANTIBIOTIC WITH ANTIPHAGE AND ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES.

TLDR
This chapter discusses the development of resistance to toxic agents in the environment through the course of natural selection, as well as its applications in the context of sport and human health.
