AI Structuralist Storytelling In Computer Games

title={AI Structuralist Storytelling In Computer Games},
  author={Chris Fairclough and P{\'a}draig Cunningham},

This paper is a description of our work in creating a story director agent which utilises AI techniques. [] Key Method The story is told through subplot-level plans being formulated with a case-based planner, and a social simulation system that the story director is 'plugged in to', allowing consistent logical stories while allowing for player freedom. The system has been named OPIATE – Open-ended Proppian Interactive Adaptive Tale Engine.

Figures from this paper

Using Narrative Cases to Author Interactive Story Content
TLDR
The possibility of writing story pieces as input knowledge is discussed, portraying both believable character behaviour and interesting story situations, and how such input knowledge can be a source of inspiration for agents in an emergent narrative simulation to improve its potential for story development.
A Novel Multi-Agent Planning System for Digital Interactive Storytelling
TLDR
The design and implementation of DIEGESIS is discussed, explaining in detail the mechanisms of the planning algorithms, and the story execution and agent coordination algorithms, along with a planning methods evaluation and agent planning and coordination examples.
Narrative inspiration: using case based problem solving for emergent story generation
TLDR
This work proposes a system that can use example story pieces, written from a plot perspective by a human author, to inspire decisions for characters in an emerging story to simulate and narrate the behaviour of believable characters in a virtual story world.
Narrative Inspiration : Using Case Based Problem Solving to Support Emergent Story Generation
TLDR
This work proposes a system that can use example story pieces, written from a plot perspective by a human author, to inspire decisions for characters in an emerging story to make the behaviour of the characters more interesting from a story perspective.
Rational Dialog in Interactive Games

AAAI Fall Symposium: Intelligent Narrative Technologies
  • 2007
TLDR
An engine is proposed that uses Multi-Agent Influence Diagrams (MAIDs) and game theory, a mathematical method of decision-making in competitive situations, to create NPCs that are sufficiently autonomous to participate in a rational dialog.
Automatically Adjusting Player Models for Given Stories in Role-Playing Games
TLDR
This paper presents the technique for adjusting the player model of each story in PACM using observed data from players, which provides the system with a more reliable player model for future playing sessions.
Qualifying Dissertation Directed Emergent Drama
TLDR
This work proposes to divide the drama into narrative episodes which are used by a director and a set of actors to structure the drama so that it emerges into a fully developed drama that adheres to a specific genre.
Evolving story and character generation for role-playing games
TLDR
A new approach by which a random story with random characters can be generated by the use of Genetic Algorithms, which can ensure that no two plays of the same game should give the user the same experience.
The Plot Thickens : bringing structure and meaning intoautomated story generation
TLDR
This thesis describes how to extend the Virtual Storyteller with a Plot Agent that will direct the events to generate more interesting stories.
PACM : Player Archetype Change Management System in Role-Playing Games
An everlasting endeavour of interactive narrative is still the enrichment of impressive storytelling experience while preserving the variety of interaction for players. Most drama management
