Hydroboration of the strained cyclopropane ring of quadricyclene in the presence of Wilkinson's catalyst results in a modest yield of direct ring cleavage. Similar reactions on norcarane and on tricyclene were unsuccessful, even under vigorous conditions. The same catalyst has been found to hydroborate styrene in a Markovnikov fashion in good yield, in agreement with previously reported results.
