OBJECTIVE ACTH is secreted by the pituitary following processing of larger molecular weight precursors, proopiomelanocortin and pro-ACTH. Ectopic ACTH syndrome refers to the secretion of ACTH by non-pituitary tumours, but the predominant circulating form of proopiomelanocortin-related peptides remains unclear.
