ABSTRACTThe globular cluster 47 Tucanae is well studied but it has many characteristicsthat are unexplained, including a significant rise in the velocity dispersion profileat large radii, indicating the exciting possibility of two distinct kinematic pop-ulations. In this Letter we employ a Bayesian approach to the analysis of thelargest available spectral dataset of 47 Tucanae to determine whether this appar-ently two-component population is real. Assuming the two models were equallylikely before… Expand

The tidal tails of 47 Tucanae
The Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc) shows a rare increase in its velocity dispersion profile at large radii, indicative of energetic, yet bound, stars at large radii dominating theExpand
Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae: new ties between the chemical and dynamical evolution of globular clusters?
Context. It is generally accepted today that Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) consist of at least two generations of stars that are different in their chemical composition and perhaps age. However,Expand
Mergers of multimetallic globular clusters: the role of dynamics
Hubble Space Telescope observations of globular clusters (GCs) in the Antenn galaxy show clusters of clusters, or regions in the galaxy that span hundreds of parsecs, where many of the GCs are doomedExpand
A Strömgren view of the multiple populations in globular clusters
We discuss a variety of photometric indices assembled from the uvby Stromgren system. Our aim is to examine the pros and cons of the various indices to find the most suitable one(s) for studying theExpand
Deep HST Imaging in 47 Tucanae: A Global Dynamical Model
Multi-epoch observations with ACS and WFC3 on HST provide a unique and comprehensive probe of stellar dynamics within 47 Tucanae. We confront analytic models of the globular cluster with the observedExpand
Halo globular clusters observed with AAOmega: dark matter content, metallicity and tidal heating
Globular clusters have proven to be essential to our understanding of many important astrophysical phenomena. Here we analyse spectroscopic observations of ten Halo globular clusters to determineExpand
The second and third parameters of the horizontal branch in globular clusters
Context. The second parameter (the first being metallicity) defining the distribution of stars on the horizontal branch (HB) of globular clusters (GCs) has long been one of the major open issues inExpand
Multiple stellar populations in the globular cluster NGC 1851
[Abridged] Detailed chemical tagging of individual stellar populations in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) NGC 1851 is presented. Abundances are derived from FLAMES spectra for the largest sampleExpand
Milky way halo objects, IC 4499 and the large magellanic cloud
The work described in this thesis is that of the candidate alone, except where otherwise acknowledged in the text. The observations of IC 4499 at the AAT were carried out by my supervisor Dr.Expand
AAOmega spectroscopy of 29 351 stars in fields centered on ten Galactic globular clusters
Galactic globular clusters have been pivotal in our understanding of many astrophysical phenomena. Here we publish the extracted stellar parameters from a recent large spectroscopic survey of tenExpand

Discovery of an Accreted Stellar System within the Globular Cluster ω Centauri
Recent wide-field photometric surveys (Lee et al.; Pancino et al.) have shown the existence of a previously unknown metal-rich ([Fe/H] -0.6) stellar population in the galactic globular cluster ωExpand
MIXED POPULATIONS IN GLOBULAR CLUSTERS: ET TU, 47 TUC?
We exploit the large number of archival Hubble Space Telescope images of 47 Tuc to examine its subgiant branch (SGB) and main sequence (MS) for signs of multiple populations. In the cluster core, weExpand
The cluster Terzan 5 as a remnant of a primordial building block of the Galactic bulge
TLDR
It is reported that Terzan 5, a globular-cluster-like system in the Galactic bulge, has two stellar populations with different iron contents and ages, which could be the surviving remnant of one of the primordial building blocks that are thought to merge and form galaxy bulges. Expand
Testing Newtonian gravity with AAOmega: mass-to-light profiles and metallicity calibrations from 47 Tuc and M55
Globular clusters (GCs) are an important test bed for Newtonian gravity in the weak-acceleration regime, which is vital to our understanding of the nature of the gravitational interaction. RecentExpand
Enrichment by supernovae in globular clusters with multiple populations
TLDR
It is concluded that these globular clusters, like ω Cen, are most probably the relics of more massive primeval dwarf galaxies that merged and disrupted to form the proto-Galaxy. Expand
Distances and ages of NGC 6397, NGC 6752 and 47 Tuc
New improved distances and absolute ages for the Galactic globular clusters NGC 6397, NGC 6752, and 47 Tuc are obtained using the Main Sequence Fitting Method. We derived accurate estimates ofExpand
CN Abundance Variations on the Main Sequence of 47 Tucanae
We report on a deep spectroscopic survey for star-to-star CN variations along the main sequence (MS) of the globular cluster 47 Tuc with ESO's Very Large Telescope. We find a significant bimodalExpand
