We develop a unified model to explain the dynamics of driven one dimensional ribbon for materials with strain and magnetic order parameters. We show that the model equations in their most general form explain several results on driven magnetostrictive metallic glass ribbons such as the period doubling route to chaos as a function of a dc magnetic field in the presence of a sinusoidal field, the quasiperiodic route to chaos as a function of the sinusoidal field for a fixed dc field, and induced…

Dynamics of a driven magneto-martensitic ribbon

Dynamics of strain bifurcations in a magnetostrictive ribbon.
A coupled nonlinear oscillator model involving magnetization and strain is developed to explain several experimentally observed dynamical features exhibited by forced magnetostrictive ribbon and suggests rich dynamics in coupled order-parameter systems such as magnetomartensitic and magnetoelectric materials.
-The phenomenological theory of resonance of a nonlinear anelastic reed is presented. It predicts three modes of oscillation, one in which amplitude and phase are constant and two in which they vary
Observation of chaotic dynamics of coupled nonlinear oscillators.
The physical system is described; equations of motion and iterative maps are reviewed and computed behavior is compared to data, with reasonable agreement for Poincare sections, bifurcation diagrams, and phase diagrams in parameter space (drive voltage, drive frequency).
Direct observation of dynamic strain bifurcations and chaos in magnetostrictive amorphous ribbons
Period doubling, quasiperiodicity, phase locking, and chaos are observed in the strain dynamics of a magnetically driven magnetostrictive ribbon (Metglas 2605S‐2). The dynamic strain response of the
An experimental study of bifurcation, chaos, and dimensionality in a system forced through a bifurcation parameter
An experimental study of a system that is parametrically excited through a bifurcation parameter is presented. The system consits of a lightly-damped, flexible beam which is buckled and unbuckled
Experimental observation of period-doubling suppression in the strain dynamics of a magnetostrictive ribbon.
First experimental verification of the predicted scaling law relating the shift of the bifurcation point to the perturbation amplitude is made, and the predicted switchlike nonlinearities in the perturbing signal around the befitting point are observed.
Phenomenology of giant magnetic-field-induced strain in ferromagnetic shape-memory materials (invited)
Ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys have recently emerged as a new class of active materials showing very large magnetic-field-induced extensional strains. Recently, a single crystal of a tetragonally
Crisis-induced intermittency in a parametrically driven, gravitationally buckled- magnetoelastic amorphous ribbon experiment (invited)
Transversely annealed amorphous metallic glass ribbons exhibit extremely large magnetoelastic coupling. Consequently, the Young’s modulus of this material can be altered by a factor of 10 with the
