By now it is well known that "many different mathematical techniques used to solve pattern recognition problems may be grouped into two general approaches: the decision-theoretic (or discriminate) approach and tile syntactic (or structural) approach". ~2~ The name 'decision-theoretic' is not quite appropriate, since all pattern recognition theories are decision oriented (or discriminate).
