Assuming the existence of a cosmological constant depending on time, we study the evolution of this field in a local region of spacetime. Solving the standard equations of Einstein Relativity in the weak field approximation we find two asymptotes in the behavior of the cosmological constant. Their meaning is the existence of an inflationary era both in the far past and in the future. A trace of the initial acceleration of the Universe can be found also in the local behavior of cosmological…

Cosmological constant and local gravity

We discuss the linearization of Einstein equations in the presence of a cosmological constant, by expanding the solution for the metric around a flat Minkowski space-time. We demonstrate that one can

Towards a realistic solution of the cosmological constant fine-tuning problem by Higgs inflation

Why is the cosmological constant Lambda observed today so much smaller than the Planck scale, and why is the Universe accelerating at present? This is the so-called cosmological constant fine-tuning

Recessional velocities and Hubble's law in Schwarzschild-de Sitter space

We consider a spacetime with empty Schwarzschild-de Sitter exterior and Schwarzschild-de Sitter interior metric for a spherical fluid with constant density. The fluid interior may be taken to

Observational Evidence from Supernovae for an Accelerating Universe and a Cosmological Constant

We present spectral and photometric observations of 10 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the redshift range 0.16 ≤ z ≤ 0.62. The luminosity distances of these objects are determined by methods that

Evolution of the scale factor with a variable cosmological term

The evolution of the scale factor $a(t)$ in Friedmann models (those with zero pressure and a constant cosmological term $\ensuremath{\Lambda})$ is well understood, and elegantly summarized in the

General relativity, astrophysics, and cosmology

This text is intended for students interested in the applications of general relativity in astrophysics and cosmology but who would like to avoid mathematical complications. It combines relativity,

Gravitation and Spacetime

Now more than ever, Gravitation and Spacetime, Second Edition, by Hans C. Ohanian and new coauthor Remo Ruffini, deserves John Wheeler's praise as "the best book on the market today of 500 pages or

Measurements of Ω and Λ from 42 High-Redshift Supernovae

We report measurements of the mass density, ΩM, and cosmological-constant energy density, ΩΛ, of the universe based on the analysis of 42 type Ia supernovae discovered by the Supernova Cosmology
