The large genus Calliopsis (Andrenidae, Panurginae) is composed of ten subgenera with polylectic and presumably oligolectic species. These categories have been mainly developed from floral visits of female bees collecting pollen. In the present study, pollen analyses of nest provisions and scopal loads from museum specimens of the monotypic subgenus Ceroliopoeum were carried out to assess its degree of specialization to pollen host-plants. Despite the great variability of floral resources close…

The diet of the augochlorine bee Augochlora amphitrite is characterized using nest and intra-nest pollen analyses and bee flower visitation and a novel approach, the index of relative importance (IRI), a method that combines pollen counts, pollen volume, and frequency of pollen occurrence.
Are Stingless Bees a Broadly Polylectic Group? An Empirical Study of the Adjustments Required for an Improved Assessment of Pollen Diet in Bees
- Environmental Science

Simple values were proposed to assess pollen diet of generalist bees: the maximum number of foraging items per nest and the maximum percentage value of foraged versus available items (adjusted) belong to a wider range of values that can be recognized as degrees of polylecty, allowing for a more precise identification.

The pattern of use of Asteroideae pollen by the Colletes bees supports recent findings that this pollen possesses unfavourable or protective properties, which render its digestion difficult, and suggests that bees need physiological adaptations to successfully utilize it.
