Children with autism spectrum disorders often exhibit co-occurring sensory processing problems and receive interventions that target self-regulation. In current practice, sensory interventions apply different theoretic constructs, focus on different goals, use a variety of sensory modalities, and involve markedly disparate procedures. Previous reviews examined the effects of sensory interventions without acknowledging these inconsistencies. This systematic review examined the research evidence…

Interventions Targeting Sensory Challenges in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review

Some interventions may yield modest short-term improvements in sensory- and ASD symptom severity-related outcomes; the evidence base is small, and the durability of the effects is unclear.

Sensory interventions for children with autism.

Although sensory interventions are common for ASD, a wide range of protocols are implemented with conflicting evidence of efficacy and variations in intervention protocols, combined with inconsistent use of terminology and conflicting findings have resulted in considerable confusion.

The effectiveness of sensory integration intervention on the emotional-behavioral problems of children with autism spectrum disorder

It can be concluded that sensory integration intervention can be a suitable treatment for reducing sensory problems and improving emotional-behavioral problems in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Sensory integration therapy for children with autism and sensory processing difficulties: the SenITA RCT.

Health economic evaluation suggests that sensory integration therapy is not cost-effective compared with usual care alone, and carers and therapists reported improvement in daily functioning.

Positive behavioral effect of sensory integration intervention in young children with autism spectrum disorder

This study evaluated the effect of sensory integration occupational therapy in improving positive behaviors of ASD children aged 2–5 years with Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale-II and found that following SI-OT, communication skills, socialization, and daily living skills were improved significantly.

Based on CEC criteria, ASI can be considered an evidence‐based practice for children with autism ages 4–12 years old.

A Systematic Review of Assessments for Sensory Processing Abnormalities in Autism Spectrum Disorder

The results of this review indicate that the majority of assessment measures are based on informant-report rather than behavioral observation, and that the most commonly used measure is the Sensory Profile (Dunn 1999, 2014).

Sensory integration therapy for autism spectrum disorders: A systematic review

Effectiveness of sensory integration interventions in children with autism spectrum disorders: a pilot study.

This pilot study established a model for randomized controlled trial research, identified appropriate outcome measures, and addressed the effectiveness of sensory integration interventions in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

A Sensory Integration Therapy Program on Sensory Problems for Children with Autism

Investigation of the effect of a sensory integration therapy program on sensory problems of children with autism indicated that the sensory integration Therapy program positively affected treated children.

A Meta-Analysis of Sensory Modulation Symptoms in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Sensory differences were highest for studies of children ages 6–9 years, samples with more than 80% with an autism diagnosis, and compared to a CA matched versus a MA or DD matched group.

Food selectivity and sensory sensitivity in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Sensory Processing Subtypes in Autism: Association with Adaptive Behavior

Model-based cluster analysis revealed three distinct sensory processing subtypes in autism, differentiated by taste and smell sensitivity and movement-related sensory behavior, which predicted communication competence and maladaptive behavior.

Results suggest the SI approach may result in positive outcomes in sensorimotor skills and motor planning; socialization, attention, and behavioral regulation; reading-related skills; participation in active play; and achievement of individualized goals.

Sensory Processing, Physiological Stress, and Sleep Behaviors in Children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorders

Examination of the relationship between physiologic responses to sensation and sleep in children with and without autism spectrum disorders confirmed that children with ASD have a higher prevalence of atypical sensory behaviors and sleep disturbances than typical children.

Describing the Sensory Abnormalities of Children and Adults with Autism

Patterns of sensory abnormalities in children and adults with autism were examined using the Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders (DISCO) and it was confirmed that sensory abnormalities are pervasive and multimodal and persistent across age and ability.
