This paper extends the work of Bird, Warner, Stewart, Sørensen, Larson and Öttinger who have applied spherical harmonics to numerically solve certain types of partial differential equations on the two-dimensional sphere. We present a new systematic approach and implementation for solving such equations with efficient numerical solutions. The main tools used to compute the coefficients for the spherical harmonic-based expansion are Rodrigues’ formula and the ladder operators. Examples are given… CONTINUE READING
