The optimisation of a printed circuit board assembly line is mainly influenced by the constraints of the surface mount device placement (SMD) machine and the characteristics of the production environment. Hence, this paper surveys the various machine technologies and characteristics and proposes five categories of machines based on their specifications and operational methods.
