A survey of aphids infesting potatoes in the plains of west bengal

Abstract

1. Incidence of aphids per leaf per plant during different periods of growth of the potato crop in the plains of West Bengal were studied. The number of aphids per leaf varied during the same period from year to year. 2. The fall of aphid migrations seemed to be correlated with unfavorable climatic conditions. 3. The aphids migrate from the end of December until the maturity of the crop which is at the end of February, after which the incidence falls. The intermittent fall and rise of aphid incidence is very much dependent on the meteorological factors. During February the aphids per plant varied from 10.76 to 400.38 in different centers. 4. There was no close correlation between the spread of viruses and the maximum number of aphids per plant.
