Programmed cell death (PCD) via apoptosis is characterized by nuclear pyknosis and fragmentation, and biochemically by oligonucleosomal cleavage of DNA. Apoptosis occurs in the developing nervous system, whereas its role in neurodegenerative diseases is still debated.
