We describe a novel camera for extracting depth informationfrom a scene. I t incorporates a single main lens along with a lenticular array placed at the sensor plane. The resulting “plenoptic camera” provides information about tance from the plane of focus. Pentland [41 has described a method for raking advantage of the properties of light within the lens aperture, by comparing two images taken with two apertures of different sizes; the change in blur can be used to estimate the depth (see also… CONTINUE READING
