The classical singularity theorems of General Relativity rely on energy conditions that are easily violated by quantum fields. Here, we provide motivation for an energy condition obeyed in semiclassical gravity: the smeared null energy condition (SNEC), a proposed bound on the weighted average of the null energy along a finite portion of a null geodesic. Using SNEC as an assumption we proceed to prove a singularity theorem. This theorem extends the Penrose singularity theorem to semiclassical…

A semiclassical singularity theorem
Quantum fields do not satisfy the pointwise energy conditions that are assumed in the original singularity theorems of Penrose and Hawking. Accordingly, semiclassical quantum gravity lies outside
Singularity theorems from weakened energy conditions
We establish analogues of the Hawking and Penrose singularity theorems based on (a) averaged energy conditions with exponential damping; (b) conditions on local stress–energy averages inspired by the
A new derivation of singularity theorems with weakened energy hypotheses
The original singularity theorems of Penrose and Hawking were proved for matter obeying the Null Energy Condition or Strong Energy Condition respectively. Various authors have proved versions of
Energy conditions and spacetime singularities
In this paper, a number of theorems are proven which collectively show that singularities will occur in spacetime under weaker energy conditions than the strong energy condition. In particular, the
The Smeared Null Energy Condition
A bstractWe propose a new bound on a weighted average of the null energy along a finite portion of a null geodesic: the Smeared Null Energy Condition (SNEC). We believe our bound is valid on scales
Null energy conditions in quantum field theory
For the quantized, massless, minimally coupled real scalar field in four-dimensional Minkowski space, we show (by an explicit construction) that weighted averages of the null-contracted stress-energy

It is shown that singularities of space-time are inevitable if the Einstein equations hold, if matter has normal properties and if the universe satisfies certain reasonable global conditions. The
Upper and lower bounds on the integrated null energy in gravity
A bstractWe prove a lower bound on the integrated null energy along achronal geodesic segments using induced gravity on a brane in AdS/CFT. The bound follows from the assumption that bulk causality
Geodesic focusing, energy conditions and singularities
Standard work on geodesic focusing assumes that a pointwise inequality, known as an energy condition, holds. This pointwise condition has been weakened by Tipler (1978) to the requirement that a
Absolute Quantum Energy Inequalities in Curved Spacetime
Abstract.Quantum Energy Inequalities (QEIs) are results which limit the extent to which the smeared renormalized energy density of the quantum field can be negative, when averaged along a timelike
