Rolling stock connection systems are key to running longer and heavier trains as they provide both the connections of vehicles and the damping, providing the longitudinal suspension of the train. This paper focuses on the evolution of both connection and stiffness damping systems. Focus is on freight rolling stock, but passenger draw gears are also examined. It was found that connection systems have evolved from the buff and chain system used in the pioneer railways of the 1800s to the modern…

Reduction of low frequency linear vibrations in long heavy haul consists
This paper presents findings from a detailed investigation of in-train forces occurring in Aurizon's coal haulage operations in the Goonyella region of Central Queensland. The work performed included
Examining longitudinal train dynamics in ore car tipplers
ABSTRACT Train simulation has been adapted in this paper to model the behaviour of indexing operations in ore car tippler operations. An important consideration in simulations at these low speeds
Improvements to train positioning velocity profiles
This paper shows how coupler forces during iron ore car dumping can be reduced by altering the velocity-time profile of the positioner. During wagon indexation large coupler loads are experienced
Design and Simulation of Rail Vehicles
The fields of rail vehicle design, maintenance, and modification, as well as performance issues related to these types of vehicles, are examined in this text. Rail vehicle design issues and dynamic
International benchmarking of longitudinal train dynamics simulators: benchmarking questions
TLDR
The benchmarking questions are described so other researchers will be able to repeat the simulations in the future and benchmark their programs against the current participating software.
Modelling, simulation and applications of longitudinal train dynamics
ABSTRACT Significant developments in longitudinal train simulation and an overview of the approaches to train models and modelling vehicle force inputs are firstly presented. The most important
A review of dynamics modelling of friction draft gear
Longer and heavier trains mean larger in-train forces and more complicated force patterns. Practical experience indicates that the development of fatigue failure of coupling systems in long heavy
Longitudinal train dynamics: an overview
ABSTRACT This paper discusses the evolution of longitudinal train dynamics (LTD) simulations, which covers numerical solvers, vehicle connection systems, air brake systems, wagon dumper systems and
Modelling Complex Series Combinations of Draft Gear Springs
A new approach to wagon connection modelling is proposed that allows each stiffness-damper component of each coupler system to be modelled separately instead of being combined into a single
International benchmarking of longitudinal train dynamics simulators: results
