We investigate the connection between dust and gas in the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 891, a target of the Very Nearby Galaxies Survey. High resolution Herschel PACS and SPIRE 70, 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 μm images are combined with JCMT SCUBA 850 μm observations to trace the far-infrared/submillimetre spectral energy distribution (SED). Maps of the Hi 21 cm line and CO(J = 3−2) emission trace the atomic and molecular hydrogen gas, respectively. We fit one-component modified…
Exploring the Dust Content of Galactic Winds with Herschel. I. NGC 4631
We present a detailed analysis of deep far-infrared observations of the nearby edge-on star-forming galaxy NGC 4631 obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory. Our PACS images at 70 and 160 um show
Exploring the dust content of galactic haloes with Herschel III. NGC 891
We present deep far-infrared observations of the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 891 obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The maps confirm the detection of thermal
Halo dust detection around NGC 891
Observations of edge-on galaxies allow us to investigate the vertical extent and properties of dust, gas and stellar distributions. NGC 891 has been studied for decades and represents one of the best
HERschel Observations of Edge-on Spirals (HEROES) III. Dust energy balance study of IC 2531
We investigate the dust energy balance for the edge-on galaxy IC 2531, one of the seven galaxies in the HEROES sample. We perform a state-of-the-art radiative transfer modelling based, for the first
Dust energy balance study of two edge-on spiral galaxies in the Herschel-ATLAS survey
Interstellar dust in galaxies can be traced either through its extinction effects on the star light or through its thermal emission at infrared wavelengths. Recent radiative transfer studies of
An extremely low gas-to-dust ratio in the dust-lane lenticular galaxy NGC 5485
Evidence is mounting that a significant fraction of the early-type galaxy population contains substantial reservoirs of cold interstellar gas and dust. We investigate the gas and dust in NGC 5485, an
Investigating the dust distribution in galaxy disks with DustPedia and NIKA2
This thesis presents the results of a multi-wavelength study into the 3D distribution of dust in the haloes of galaxies. A sample of 31 nearby, edge-on galaxies from the DustPedia database is used
We investigate the far-infrared (IR) dust emission for 20 local star forming galaxies from the Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: A Far-IR Survey with Herschel (KINGFISH) sample. We model the
Herschel-ATLAS: the surprising diversity of dust-selected galaxies in the local submillimetre Universe
We present the properties of the first 250 μm blind sample of nearby galaxies (15 < D < 46 Mpc) containing 42 objects from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey. Herschel's
The ionized gas in nearby galaxies as traced by the [N ii] 122 and 205 μm transitions
The [N ii] 122 and 205 μm transitions are powerful tracers of the ionized gas in the interstellar medium. By combining data from 21 galaxies selected from the Herschel KINGFISH and Beyond the Peak

Cold dust in the giant barred galaxy NGC 1365
Constraining the physcial properties of dust requires observations at submm wavelengths. This will provide important insight into the gas content of galaxies. We mapped NGC 1365 at 870 μm with
The Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey. IV. Resolved dust analysis of spiral galaxies
We present a resolved dust analysis of three of the largest angular size spiral galaxies, NGC 4501 and NGC 4567/8, in the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS) science demonstration field. Herschel
The Herschel Virgo Cluster survey, X: the relationship between cold dust and molecular gas content in Virgo spirals
Aims. We examine whether dust mass can trace the total or molecular gas mass in late-type Virgo cluster galaxies, and how the environment affects the dust-to-gas ratio and the molecular fraction.
Dust emission is one of the main windows to the physics of galaxies and to star formation as the radiation from young, hot stars is absorbed by the dust and reemitted at longer wavelengths. The
Using infrared imaging from the Herschel Space Observatory, observed as part of the Very Nearby Galaxies Survey, we investigate the spatially resolved dust properties of the interacting Whirlpool
The Dust & Gas Properties of M83
We examine the dust and gas properties of the nearby, barred galaxy M83, which is part of the Very Nearby Galaxy Survey. Using images from the PACS and SPIRE instruments of Herschel, we examine the
The gas-to-dust mass ratio of Centaurus A as seen by Herschel
We present photometry of the nearby galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) observed with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE)
HERschel Observations of Edge-on Spirals (HEROES) - I. Far-infrared morphology and dust mass determination
Context. Edge-on spiral galaxies with prominent dust lanes provide us with an excellent opportunity to study the distribution and properties of the dust within them. The HEROES project was set up to
Herschel photometric observations of the nearby low metallicity irregular galaxy NGC 6822
We present the first Herschel PACS and SPIRE images of the low-metallicity galaxy NGC 6822 observed from 70 to 500 mu m and clearly resolve the H II regions with PACS and SPIRE. We find that the
Herschel-ATLAS: correlations between dust and gas in local submm-selected galaxies
We present an analysis of CO molecular gas tracers in a sample of 500 μm-selected Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) galaxies at z < 0.05 (cz < 14990 km s−1). Using 22-500
