The microbial peptidomacrolide FK506 affects many eukaryotic developmental and cell signaling programs via calcineurin inhibition. Prior formation of a complex between FK506 and intracellular FK506-binding proteins (FKBPs) is the precondition for the interaction with calcineurin.
