Abstract The ATP-ase aotivity and mitochondrial density of muscle fibres in the lateral musculature of immature European eels, Anguilla anguilla (L.), were examined. The quantitative results show that in the peripheral (superficial) complex of ‘red’ fibres as well as in the deep ‘white’ fibre complexes small numbers of ‘displaced’ fibres occur.
