INTRODUCTION The optimal hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatment protocol for acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is unknown. This is indicated by one study that found 18 different protocols to treat CO poisoning by North American multiplace hyperbaric facilities. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of randomizing patients to different protocols and to determine whether any large differences in clinical outcome were present between the two most common protocols. METHODS Adult… Expand
Hyperbaric Oxygen for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
TLDR
Assessment of the effectiveness of HBO compared with normobaric oxygen for the prevention of neurological sequelae in patients with acute CO poisoning found empiric evidence of multiple biases that operated to inflate the benefit of HBO in two positive trials. Expand
In Reply: “Single Versus Multiple Hyperbaric Sessions for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in a Murine Model”
TLDR
Whether there is a difference between one versus multiple HBO sessions for the prevention of delayed neurologic sequelae (DNS) due to CO poisoning is sought in a mouse model and there was no difference between groups treated with either one or three HBO sessions. Expand
Single Versus Multiple Hyperbaric Sessions for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in a Murine Model
TLDR
To determine in a mouse model whether there is a difference between one versus multiple HBO sessions for the prevention of delayed neurologic sequelae (DNS) due to CO poisoning, Hyperbaric oxygen has been advocated for treatment of acute carbon monoxide poisoning. Expand
Hyperbaric oxygen for carbon monoxide poisoning.
TLDR
Existing randomised trials do not establish whether the administration of HBO to patients with carbon monoxide poisoning reduces the incidence of adverse neurologic outcomes, and pooled random effects meta-analysis does not suggest a significant benefit from HBOT. Expand
Clinical Communications: Adults SEIZURE DURING HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY FOR CARBON MONOXIDE TOXICITY: A CASE SERIES AND FIVE-YEAR EXPERIENCE
TLDR
The risk factors and incidence of seizures in patients treated with HBO for CO toxicity are elucidated and this facility’s 5-year experience and a review of the germane literature are presented to elucidate the risk factors. Expand
Seizure during hyperbaric oxygen therapy for carbon monoxide toxicity: a case series and five-year experience.
TLDR
This facility's 5-year experience and a review of the germane literature are presented to elucidate the risk factors and incidence of seizures in patients treated with HBO for CO toxicity. Expand
Neurocognitive sequelae after carbon monoxide poisoning and hyperbaric oxygen therapy
TLDR
The neuroc cognitive sequelae after CO poisoning is briefly introduced, the potential predictive factors of neurocognitive sequelae are summarized, and the use of HBO is discussed in the treatment and prevention of Neurocognitive sequels afterCO poisoning. Expand
Oxygen Toxicity Seizure During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Case Report
TLDR
A 29-year-old woman without any known history of neurological illness who had seizure during HBO therapy for Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, a case with possible neurotoxic effects of HBO therapy is presented. Expand
Complications of carbon monoxide poisoning: a case discussion and review of the literature.
TLDR
The following case vignette and review of the literature should serve to highlight aspects of CO poisoning and its complications. Expand
Restoring Vascular Function with Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment: Recovery Mechanisms
TLDR
Some of the most important uses of hyperbaric oxigenation for clinical conditions that involve abnormal vascular function are discussed and recent studies and insights into the mechanisms and effects ofhyperbaric oxygen in the vasculature are presented. Expand

The total number of patients treated annually did not decrease during the period studied, but the number treated per facility did decline as a result of an increase in number of treating facilities. Expand

TLDR
This study reviews data from 900 CO-poisoned patients treated with HBO2 at Virginia Mason and Duke University Medical Centers from 1987 to 1996 to find the potential difference in seizure risk should be considered when selecting the HBO2 treatment pressure for CO poisoning. Expand
Non-comatose patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning: hyperbaric or normobaric oxygenation?

TLDR
Experiments with rats found that brain lipid peroxidation could be documented as a result of exposure to CO at a concentration sufficient to cause unconsciousness, and this work may provide an explanation for a number of currently poorly understood clinical observations regarding CO poisoning.
