The reaction mechanism of the Mitochondrial Processing Peptidase enzyme (MPP) was investigated by using hybrid density functional theory. This enzyme removes the NH(2)-terminal targeting signals of nuclear-encoded mitochondrial protein precursors in the mitochondrial matrix.
