}BACKGROUND
The measurement of blood pressure (BP) at home by patients with hypertension is increasingly used to assess and monitor BP. Evidence for its effectiveness in improving BP control is mixed.
METHODS
To determine if home BP monitoring improves BP a pragmatic cluster randomized contolled trial was carried out in family practices in southeastern Ontario, Canada. Family practice patients with uncontrolled hypertension were recruited to the trail. Patients were divided into two groups…

Home blood pressure monitoring with nurse-led telephone support among patients with hypertension and a history of stroke: a community-based randomized controlled trial
- Medicine, PsychologyCanadian Medical Association Journal
- 2013
Overall, home monitoring did not improve blood pressure control in patients with hypertension and a history of stroke, and was associated with a fall in systolic pressure in patients who had uncontrolled blood pressure at baseline and those without disability due to stroke.
Is antihypertensive treatment based on home blood pressure recommended rather than that based on office blood pressure in adults with essential hypertension? (meta-analysis)
- MedicineHypertension Research
- 2019
Home BP-based treatment is strongly recommended to control BP, especially in the setting of a lower home BP target than an office BP target level, as well as other interventions based on using home BP when compared with usual care based on office BP.
Role of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring in Overcoming Therapeutic Inertia and Improving Hypertension Control: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
- MedicineHypertension
- 2011
Compared with clinic BP monitoring alone, home BP monitoring has the potential to overcome therapeutic inertia and lead to a small but significant reduction in systolic and diastolic BP.
Effect of Home Blood Pressure Telemonitoring With Self-Care Support on Uncontrolled Systolic Hypertension in Diabetics
- MedicineHypertension
- 2012
Home blood pressure telemonitoring combined with automated self-care support reduced the blood pressure of diabetic patients with uncontrolled systolic hypertension and improved hypertension control and was obtained without the use of more or different antihypertensive medications or additional clinic visits to physicians.
Self‐blood pressure monitoring is associated with improved awareness, adherence, and attainment of target blood pressure goals: Prospective observational study of 7751 patients
- MedicineJournal of clinical hypertension

Self‐blood pressure monitoring is associated with reduced BP, better BP control rate, greater drug adherence, and improved perception of BP by the patients.
Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring in the Management of Hypertension
- MedicineAnnals of Internal Medicine
- 2013
Self-measured BP monitoring with or without additional support lowers BP compared with usual care, but the BP effect beyond 12 months and long-term benefits remain uncertain and additional support enhances the BP-lowering effect.
Are stroke patients' reports of home blood pressure readings reliable? Cross-sectional study.
- MedicineFamily practice
- 2011
This group of elderly stroke patients were able to record their BPs reliably at home and GPs might consider using hypertensive patients' records of home BP monitoring to help guide treatment decisions.

Self-monitoring alone is not associated with lower BP or better control, but in conjunction with co-interventions leads to clinically significant BP reduction which persists for at least 12 months.
