BACKGROUND Rhodiola rosea is an herbal supplement that many in the general population in Russia and elsewhere in the world have used for decades to alleviate everyday anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Whether R. rosea is effective in reducing similar symptoms in clinical samples is unknown. The goal of this pilot study was to evaluate whether R. rosea is effective in reducing symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). METHOD Ten (10) participants with a DSM-IV diagnosis of GAD…

A preliminary assessment of a combination of rhodiola and saffron in the management of mild–moderate depression
TLDR
Results of this observational study suggest that the combination of rhodiola and saffron tested could be useful for the management of mild–moderate depression and improve depressive and anxiety symptoms.
The Effects of Rhodiola rosea L. Extract on Anxiety, Stress, Cognition and Other Mood Symptoms
TLDR
Rhodiola rosea L (Vitano®) presented a favourable safety tolerability profile and it is unlikely that the findings were the result of placebo effects as changes appeared gradual and were specific to certain psychological measures.
The Effectiveness of Rhodiola rosea L. Preparations in Alleviating Various Aspects of Life-Stress Symptoms and Stress-Induced Conditions—Encouraging Clinical Evidence
Rhodiola rosea L. has a long history of use in traditional medicine to stimulate the nervous system, treat stress-induced fatigue and depression, enhance physical performance and work productivity

Potential Antidepressant Effects of Scutellaria baicalensis, Hericium erinaceus and Rhodiola rosea
TLDR
These three traditional folk medicinal herbs target the main biochemical events that are implicated in mental disorders, mimicking, to some extent, the mechanisms of action of conventional antidepressants and mood stabilizers with a wide margin of tolerability.
Dietary supplement with a combination of Rhodiola crenulata and Ginkgo biloba enhances the endurance performance in healthy volunteers
TLDR
The combined herbal supplement of Rhodiola and Gingko could improve the endurance performance by increasing oxygen consumption and protecting against fatigue.
Salidroside, a Bioactive Compound of Rhodiola Rosea, Ameliorates Memory and Emotional Behavior in Adult Mice.
TLDR
Results showed that a single i.p. administration of salidroside was able to enhance fear memory and exerted an anxiolytic and antidepressant effect, which confirmed the adaptogenic effect of R. Rosea bioactive compounds in animal models and suggest that salid roside might represent an interesting pharmacological tool to ameliorate cognition and counteract mood disorders.
Exploring new applications for Rhodiola rosea: can we improve the quality of life of patients with short-term hypothyroidism induced by hormone withdrawal?
TLDR
R. rosea is proposed as a viable alternative treatment for the symptoms of short-term hypothyroidism in patients with DTC who require hormone withdrawal and is a popular plant in traditional medical systems in Eastern Europe and Asia with a reputation for stimulating the nervous system.

TLDR
Although kava was not superior to placebo, it would be premature to rule it out as efficacious in GAD, and both treatments were well tolerated.

TLDR
The adaptogenic, cardiopulmonary protective, and central nervous system activities of Rhodiola rosea have been attributed primarily to its ability to influence levels and activity of monoamines and opioid peptides such as beta-endorphins.

Kava in generalized anxiety disorder: three placebo-controlled trials
TLDR
In the pooled analyses, no effects were found for kava, while a significant effect in favor of placebo was observed in participants with higher anxiety at baseline, and all of the treatments were well tolerated.
Acute Rhodiola rosea intake can improve endurance exercise performance.
TLDR
Acute Rhodiola rosea intake can improve endurance exercise capacity in young healthy volunteers and this response was not altered by prior daily 4-week Rhodiola intake.
