  • Abstract The paper describes a photographic study, at framing rates up to 500 f.p.s. of the effects of ultrasonics on the solidification of a simulated metal. It is concluded that the main source of grain refinement is the disruption of growing crystals by the oscillations of acoustically-induced cavities and bubbles and by ultrasonically induced bulk flow of the melt.
