Background In preclinical models, the proton pump inhibitor pantoprazole enhances the antitumor activity of chemotherapeutic agents by improving drug distribution and by inhibiting autophagy. Methods Patients with advanced solid tumors (n = 24) received doxorubicin 60 mg/m2 and escalating doses of pantoprazole (80, 160, 240 and 360 mg) administered intravenously prior to doxorubicin.
