This study compares two diphthongs ([ea], [oa]) and two glide-vowel sequences ([ja], [wa]) in Romanian. The diphthongs and the sequences are auditorily very similar, but they differ in their phonological patterning. An integrated production and perception experiment is conducted in search of perceptual and acoustic evidence for the different phonological representations proposed for the diphthongs and the sequences. Four acoustic parameters of the diphthongs and sequences are measured and…
Evidence and characterization of a glide-vowel distinction in American English
This study tests whether native speakers of American English exhibit a glide-vowel distinction ([j]-[i]) in a speech elicitation experiment. When reading sentences out loud, participants’
Accounting for Diphthongs: Duration as Contrast in Vowel Dispersion Theory
This dissertation investigates the production and perception properties of diphthong vowels at different speech rates in order to advance the understanding of diphthong phonetics and to incorporate
The Acquisition of Vocalic Sequences by English-Speaking L2 Learners of Spanish
TLDR
It was found that the duration of vowels in sequence is somewhat exaggerated by learners and that while phonological transfer was not evident, a positive effect of phonetic transfer occurred, resulting in an almost native-like pronunciation of certain Spanish syllables that are illicit in English.
The Vietnamese vowel system
In this dissertation, I provide a new analysis of the Vietnamese vowel system as a system with fourteen monophthongs and nineteen diphthongs based on phonetic and phonological data. I propose that
Investigating L2 Acquisition of Spanish Vocalic Sequences
Abstract While previous studies have investigated the acquisition of Spanish vowels by English speakers, none has examined how sequences of vowels are acquired. This study considers the developmental
The phonetic motivation for phonological stop assibilation
This article examines the motivation for phonological stop assibilations, e.g. /t/ is realized as [ts], [s] or [t∫] before /i/, from the phonetic perspective. Hall & Hamann (2006) posit the following

The Phonology of Romanian: A Constraint-Based Approach
TLDR
This book provides the first systematic descriptive analysis of the phonological system of Romanian from the perspective of recent phonological theory, and contains an abundance of systematically organized data that makes it a solid reference for students and scholars of general and Romance phonology, and a strong basis for further study.
