Administration of poly(ADP-ribose) synthetase inhibitors such as nicotinamide to 90% depancreatized rats induces regeneration of pancreatic islets, thereby ameliorating the surgical diabetes (Yonemura, Y., Takashima, T., Miwa, K., Miyazaki, I., Yamamoto, H., and Okamoto, H.
