Abstract The effects of providing control over heat onset were examined in 36 pigs, aged 28 days at the start of the experiment. Pigs were randomly allocated to one of three treatments, and then housed in pairs. Treatment S provided standard accommodation with continuous heat from an infrared source. Treatment O allowed pigs operant control of an infrared heat source. Treatment Y was yoked to treatment O such that pigs received identical reinforcement non-contingently.
