INTRODUCTION Prior to Gauthier’s classic (1986) monograph, our understanding of the interrelationships of theropod dinosaurs could be described as murky at best. Most works still adhered to the old notion of a coelurosaur versus carnosaur dichotomy that separated small gracile forms from the larger, more robust, taxa. Nevertheless many had expressed doubts as to the ‘naturalness’ (monophyly in modern parlance) of these groupings. Gauthier established a basal dichotomy in Theropoda that cut…

A New Early Coelophysoid Neotheropod from the Late Triassic of Northwestern Argentina

Powellvenator podocitus represents the first coelophysoid from South America together with Lucianovenator bonoi from the Marayes-El Carrizal Basin and phylogenetic relationships of the new species were tested in a comprehensive analyses focused on early neotheropods.

Magnosaurus nethercombensis from the Lower Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) of Dorset, UK is a valid species, possessing a single autapomorphy: the presence of anteroposteriorly elongate foramina, inclined

The skull of Monolophosaurus jiangi (Dinosauria: Theropoda) and its implications for early theropod phylogeny and evolution

The skull of Monolophosaurus is redescribed, which is one of the most complete basal tetanuran skulls known and the only quality source of cranial data for Middle Jurassic Chinese theropods, and several features suggest a basal position within Tetanurae, which contrasts with most published cladistic analyses.

The oldest ceratosaurian (Dinosauria: Theropoda), from the Lower Jurassic of Italy, sheds light on the evolution of the three-fingered hand of birds

Compared to the atrophied hand of later members of Ceratosauria, Saltriovenator demonstrates that a fully functional hand, well-adapted for struggling and grasping, was primitively present in ceratosaurians.

Osteology of Cryolophosaurus ellioti (Dinosauria: Theropoda) from the Early Jurassic of Antarctica and implications for early theropod evolution

An in-depth morphological description of Cryolophosaurus is pre-sented here, along with a rigorous phylogenetic analysis of theropod relationships consisting of 347 characters and 56 taxa, in an attempt to clarify the relationships of Crylophosaurus and to provide insight into questions sur-rounding early theropid evolution.

New dinosaur (Theropoda, stem-Averostra) from the earliest Jurassic of the La Quinta formation, Venezuelan Andes

Data show that the sampled summer-wet equatorial belt, which yielded the new taxon, played a pivotal role in theropod evolution across the Triassic–Jurassic boundary, as well as suggesting an earliest Jurassic maximum age for the La Quinta Formation.

A description of Megalosaurus bucklandii (Dinosauria: Theropoda) from the Bathonian of the UK and the relationships of Middle Jurassic theropods

Megalosaurus bucklandii (Dinosauria: Theropoda), the oldest named dinosaur taxon, from the Bathonian of England, is a valid taxon diagnosed by a unique character combination of the lectotype dentary, and a new phylogenetic analysis focuses on basal tetanurans, revealing several new results.

The Late Triassic dinosauromorph Sacisaurus agudoensis (Caturrita Formation; Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil): anatomy and affinities

Abstract Silesauridae is an exclusively Triassic group of dinosauromorphs, knowledge on the diversity of which has increased dramatically in the last few years. Silesaurid relationships are still

A New Basal Sauropodomorph Dinosaur from the Early Jurassic of South Africa

ABSTRACT A new basal sauropodornorph dinosaur, Arcusaurus pereirabdalorum, sp. nov., is named and described on the basis of a partial, disarticulated but associated skull and dispersed cranial and

DISCOVERY OF MEGALOSAUR (DINOSAURIA, THEROPODA) IN THE MIDDLE BATHONIAN OF NORMANDY (FRANCE) AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PHYLOGENY OF BASAL TETANURAE

The proposed phylogenetic analysis hypothesizes two previously unrecognized major radiations of carnivorous dinosaurs, one of which appears less derived than the Allosauroidea but resemble the Spinosauridae, with which they form the sister-group to the Neotetanurae.

A new species of the theropod dinosaur Syntarsus from the Early Jurassic Kayenta Formation of Arizona

The discovery of Syntarsus in North America adds significantly to the increasingly detailed resemblance of African and North American Early Jurassic terrestrial vertebrate faunas.

A new species of the primitive dinosaur Thecodontosaurus (Saurischia: Sauropodomorpha) and its implications for the systematics of early dinosaurs

Synopsis Juvenile sauropodomorph specimens from a Late Triassic/Early Jurassic fissure fill in Pant‐y‐ffynnon Quarry, South Wales are redescribed and named as a new species, Thecodontosaurus caducus.

A DEFINITIVE ABELISAURID THEROPOD DINOSAUR FROM THE EARLY LATE CRETACEOUS OF PATAGONIA

Abstract A nearly complete, well-preserved maxilla of an abelisaurid theropod from the early Late Cretaceous (middle Cenomanian-Turonian) Lower Member of the Bajo Barreal Formation of Chubut,

  • 2001
The last several years have seen the discovery of many new theropod dinosaur taxa. Data obtained from these and from fragmentary forms not previously utilized in cladistic analyses are examined. An

The inclusion of the Tyrannosauridae within Maniraptora suggests a major adaptive radiation of coelurosaurs within Cretaceous Asiamerica comparable to contemporaneous radiations in various herbivorous dinosaurian clades.

ANATOMY AND SYSTEMATICS OF THE PROSAUROPOD DINOSAUR THECODONTOSAURUS ANTIQUUS FROM THE UPPER TRIASSIC OF SOUTHWEST ENGLAND

Abstract Re-examination of the surviving specimens of Thecodontosaurus antiquus indicates that this plesiomorphic sauropodomorph can be diagnosed on the basis of elongate basipterygoid processes, a

A new carnosaur (Dinosauria, Theropoda) from the Jurassic of Xinjiang, People's Republic of China

In 1987, a Sino-Canadian expedition known as the Dinosaur Project (China – Canada – Alberta – Ex Terra) discovered a large theropod skeleton in the Upper Jurassic Shishugou Formation of the Junggar

A new Triassic carnivorous dinosaur from Argentina

Abstract. A new Triassic theropod, Zupaysaurusrougieriis described from La Rioja Province and its phylogenetic relationships amongst Theropoda are discussed. Zupaysaurusshares with Tetanurae several

The species taxonomy of the sauropodomorph dinosaurs from the Löwenstein Formation (Norian, Late Triassic) of Germany

It was found that two discrete taxa comprise the current hypodigm of Sellosaurus, the more common form of which is a plesiomorphic form for which the correct name is Efraasia minor comb and is placed in this genus as Plateosaurus gracilis.
